Carol House became fascinated in working with clay and the kiln firing process in high school. She started as an art major at Glassboro State College and then moved out west where she began her own business making porcelain wind chimes. She studied Chinese watercolor and began to paint on the wind chimes using oxide stains. Moving back east she continued study of Chinese watercolor in New York City and began working with tile where she could concentrate on painting with glazes and stains. She honors the four elements in her work, the clay body represents the earth, the water mixes the colors and makes them flow, the air dries and sets the colors and the fire of the kiln fuses it all together to create something that could possibly last for centuries. She has developed her own painting style that is inspired by her love of flowers and the whimsy of nature.
Since 1985, when she moved back east, Carol has shown her hand painted tile trivets at juried craft shows along the east coast from Massachusetts to Virginia, winning Best of Show in Ringwood, NJ. She also does custom work for kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces working with homeowners and designers. Carol found a love for teaching tile and ceramic painting and offers classes in her Blairstown studio for adults and children, often working with the Girl Scouts. Contact information:
