Artist's Statement

Wabi, can be understood as the avoidance of luxury. It is the natural expression of feelings that are simple and unimposing. I strived to maintain the concept of wabi in my work. My work was created in the simplistic of forms. I am fastinated with the challenge of raku. After visualizing shapes in my head, I hand-build plates/bowls/sculptures. Before the work is dried, I etch, add, subtract with geometric or free-form designs. Later I determine the glaze combinations. Each piece has it's own character, expression and message. The final firing is a wonderful experience! The kiln temperature is slowly brought to 1800 degrees. I fire lusters in a reduction kiln and fats in oxidation. Experience is the guide when visually checking for glaze maturity. The shape, decoration, texture, glaze, smoke and fire all contribute to the final look of my work.

Intentions

Develop my form beyond a flat surface
Explore organic areas to enhance the design
Take risks in altering the form, adding clay
Experiment with glaze/slip applications

Methodology

The patterns on the plate were asymmetrical. I experiment with slip and luster combinations, high contrast and shiny vs. flat.
